MONKEYDINNER

Before our next show, (cagematch) Monkeydick, decide to get some dinner before hand. OUTBACK steakhouse. Hooray! Steak!

However, whenever I go to a resturant I always end up getting food on myself and I hate to ruin my suit before the show. I know some of you are saying. "Well, just don't get food on you" but I am extremely clumsy. I will have to wearaa bib. So, come see cagematch. Not just for to see for the improv, but to see if I got any stains on me.

America Fixed

Rob and I did our spank. The team was in full attendence, or at least they were by the end of the show. Ex-Monkeydickers Mitch and Jane came as well. Good feelings all around. Awww.

In order to be Alan Greenspan, I bought a pair of sunglasses last minute at Duane Reade and popped the lenses out. I was left with what I believe looked like the frames Mars Blackman wore in She's Gotta Have It. Not very Greenspan-y. But they made Rob laugh. And three different people said after seeing them: "Start wearing them all the time." Three different people -- I shit you not, my friends. I believe these glasses were exerting mind control over those who saw them.

Freaky Friday

So, we are preparing for the 2nd Annual Monkeydick Valentines drag show, but this year we're saddled with a bunch of girlfriends so we can't actually do Valentine's Day, I guess (breakdown 5:3 attached to free as of this date).

The Friday before, Mr. Rocco points out, is the 13th. "Freaky Friday." Are we go, mates?

I saw this woman on Conan once. She made me a little nervous -- http://www.missvera.com/

Tremors + Antitrust = 100% Entertainment

Thursday night at Cinema Classics, 8:00 PM Monkey Brett Gelman and Monkeydick coach and friend Seth Morris (we really ought to give Seth a credit somewhere on here) are doing a variety show. Cinema Classics AKA Rififi is next to Veniero's on 11th between 1st and 2nd Aves.

Incidentally, Antitrust has some of the most off-base depiction of programmers I've ever seen in my life. Not a filthy overweight bearded Tolkien enthusiast in the bunch.

Three by Three

Two Monkeydick-centric teams have been chosen out of a hat for the UCB Theatre's 3 x 3 tournament... Death by Ruru (Curtis Gwinn, John Gemberling & Brett Gelman) and _____ (Andy Rocco, Matt DeCoster & Jon Daly of Mother). Rumor has it due to absenses, the teams may combine...

I have no actual facts on this. And I'm drunk right now.

Studies in Hubris?

This will be particularly bittersweet, rereading this thread months from now when internal rivalries and politics have torn this group apart, or after some seemingly awesome bold move we do alienates the entire world and makes us hated comedy pariahs. Monkeydick! It seemed we could do no wrong!

As for now, in the present, this is a thread of people from our improv community in New York saying nice things about us --

Harold in Review

We were light one (Brett had the flu) and Will insisted he had lost his hearing and ability to understand words, but we did it! Hooray for us!

The Most

Jezum Crow, we have a harold tonight. First half, right?

I feel like shit and since I'm painting my apartment I can't get to my nice clothes in the closet (it's all got furniture piled on top of it and drop cloths), so I'm gonna look slovenly.

Moderately slovenly.

Delaying and Surveying

I found my dress last year so unbelievably close to showtime that I'm lucky I made it. I'd really like to find a nicer outfit this year and get someone to help with makeup. I remember last year it seemed that Brian tried to dress up like a girl he might try to pick up -- not sure if that really was his strategy or if it just seemed like it -- but I think that might be a good way.

Of course, I'll end up just running to the Salvation Army on Bedford St. at the last possible moment and end up looking a lot like Will Hines In A Dress more than anything else. Sigh. Maybe if I have a wheat grass shot.

I saw Murray Hill host Matt DeCoster's trapeze show and thought it was a man -- just a man who had the same condition that Andy Milonakas (sp?) has. I am not bright.

Listen up shit-birds!

It's time to get your asses in the seats and see a Monkeydick show. Come on now, don;t be a billy-bumbler.

Shaving and behaving

Last year for the drag show I found a great dress, but had I shave my chest for it. So I did. I itched for month and I'll do it again, for comedy. I also, I figured I got lose weight anyway, so I'll find a dress early and lose weight to get into it.

Packin' and Strappin'

We're already looking ahead to Valentine's Day in what we hope will be our 2nd annual Monkeydick drag Harold. (Check out photos in our gallery for those of you who missed it).

It's got me thinking about how I have to play it, since the whole joke of the drag show was it was the only all male team doing it. I've been doing some research on drag kings and... most of them suck. Well, not suck, but there seems to be so little variety to them (That's kind of true of drag queens but they're also prettier to look at) -- almost everyone does an "asshole" character. Maybe it's because the main practicioners are lesbians who have a pretty low opinion of men in general, but almost every one is of the greased-pompadour rockabilly thug with a fake looking goatee. There are variations (I like Murray Hill's look), but its almost always "an asshole" and the look is basicaly a butch lesbian with a stick-on facial hair.

So, I'm probably going to do more of a character drag. Rather than "asshole" drag. Aiming for a character that I can pull off. Maybe some shoe-gazing indie rock dude. Or my dad.

I found a million tutorials for how to go stick on fake sideburns but not one on how to do a receding hairline. What up, drag kings?

PRE-SHOW WHEAT GRASS SHOT RITUAL

Two weeks ago... before a show I watched (fellow monkey) Brett Gelman have a wheat grass shot. I didn't have any money on me, but I always wanted to get one. (not that they super-expensive, but I'm really broke) The next week comes around, I have a little moolah, and I decided to get a shot. I got to the city super early and I go get the shot.
It taste like grass, it's got all the viatims you should have in week all at once (so, I heard), it helps you perfom better sexually (so, I heard) and it gives a jolt of energy (which kind of does.)
After the shot I had a hotdog, which felt like counter-prodcutive.
Then I bumped into a friend on the street, and then had another with him.
So, what is the point? I want to make this part of my pre-show ritual. So I invite all of you to come and have wheat grass with me!
I will be at this place call "Toasties" on the 7th Ave between 22nd and 23rd
at 6:30pm THIS TUESDAY! BE THERE!

TBS Keeps Bangin' Out The Hits

It's was another hottt basic channel weekend as I watched most of "102 Dalmations," "Larger than Life" and "Down to Earth." I watched none of these twice though, since they weren't shown back-to-back with themselves (as I did several weekends ago where I watched "The Devil's Advocate" 2x and "House on Haunted Hill" 1.5 x

I should get out of the improv business and into the watching-terrible-movies and commercials on TBS business.

We have been talking about some cinematic themed projects in Monkeydick's future. I hope I can chalk all these hours up as "research"

paper trails to you

So we're all talking about kicking up the Monkeydick promotion engine (mostly because [a big pussy on the team who only appears badass behind closed doors and can remain anonymous] wants to "put Dillinger back in the cradle where they belong!") Almost all Harold teams at UCB have been more into the merch... flyers, stickers, shirts, etc. We've discussed things, but no decisions have been made.

The first thing on the agenda is an actual professionally-printed, color flyers. Rocco's superiors at Kinkos are giving him the stink eye over pilfering copies at work, so we have to actually pay money now.

I did some leg work on printers (see extended entry), but really, I'd rather do something besides the normal 6 x 4 that everyone does. Maybe an odd shape or a die-cut... a two-color flyer might look boss (and be cheaper).

And then there's the problem of design...

Selected resources for printing:

Compucolor (UCB default)

4 x 6 - $350 (5000)

On The Flying Trapeze

See Matt DeCoster defy gravity...Here's what he had to say:

"The shows are on Saturday, November 8, at 8:00 and 10:00 and on Sunday, November 9, at 4:00.

It takes place at Union Pool at 484 Union Avenue at Meeker Street, about 1 block from the Lorimer Street stop on the L/G line in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Tickets are $10.  To make reservations, which is probably a good idea since the last show sold out, call 718 302-9126."

Rob and Will Fix America

Lots of solo Monkeydick in NYC tonight. Not only are Brett Gelmen and Monkeydick guru Seth Morris doing their variety show, but Rob Lathan and myself are giving a sampling of sketches from our show "Rob and Will Fix America" tonight at Variety Underground. WOW! That's a lot of Monkeydick.

People who know Rob and myself know that we have a lot of deeply informed and complicated views on politics. These views will inform our subtle, intellectual sketch comedy, like our famous "Charlie Rose on a Pogo Stick" sketch. Expect a lot of U.N. diplomats at tonight's show.

Variety Underground, tonight: 7-9pm @Parkside Lounge. 317 E. Houston St. (at Attorney St.)

Greetings, Earth

At first, I tried to make pages and incorporate Dyna's graphics. Somehow, I made every page a slightly different color and couldn't line anything up. Dyna took over, and now we have this. I guess I'm biased, but I think it's pretty damn good!

Among the features: list of our shows, a web log, individual bio pages, a team history, list of side projects and photos.

The web log will hopefully let team members post about what they're doing on their own, or just what the team is doing, or whatever.

I plan to get more photos up soon.

And I plan to make the show listing automatic by plundering the script that Dillinger's Brett Christensen wrote. I like their whole site, actually, and maybe I'll just steal that.

You can get to info about any monkeydick member by putting their first name after the URL like this:

http://www.monkeydick.com/will
http://www.monkeydick.com/curtis

...like that. because god knows, one thing the internet needs is faster access to information on specific members of an improv team called monkeydick.

thanks to brian berrebbi for the idea to use movable type on this site to begin with.

Instant Cinema!

Tonight at 11:00 at the UCB Theatre (and it's always "-re" since that's what it says on the awning) is the final regular performance* of my (and Brian Huskey and Seth Morris') 4P class "Instant Cinema."

The group is super fantastic and features fellow Monkeys John Gemberling and Curtis Gwinn.

*We have a bonus performance on the day before Thanksgiving for those of you that hate your families.
